Cañizares also spoke about the competition for Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper position between an experienced player and a talented young up-and-coming keeper, possibly including another Polish keeper, Wojciech Szczesny.
‘It’s not a tribute, it’s a spark. This guy can’t be on the bench,’ Canizares said.
‘Ter Stegen has a long way to go and Joan is the best goalkeeper of the year. He’s only been in the top flight for one year and he’s already shown his character and quality. But Ter Stegen is huge, there’s no doubt about that.’
Despite respecting Ter Stegen’s track record, Canizares didn’t hide his admiration for Garcia, saying boldly:
“I’m Joan’s to death.” With this kind of support and form, Barcelona may soon have a new face between the posts, and it won’t be an easy decision for the club.
